Crocker Advisor Meeting Recap for the Buzz

Good Morning Crocker!

The Crocker Advisors met yesterday and below is an overview of our conversation.  Please know – you don’t need to be a Crocker Advisor to attend these meetings. The Advisors are the core group of participants, but the meetings are open to everyone.

Student Concerns:  Homework in certain subjects as well as in the same subject at the same grade level; sometimes the curriculum and workload seems different between the two classes.

Feedback and Questions:  Elective and Flex classes.

·         Make sure students can see all their electives on their first schedule.

·         6th Grade Flex should remain as is.

·         7th – 8th Grade Flex class – probably should be a full year class.

·         Students liked having silent reading in Flex; however, requested staff talk about eliminating silent reading on minimum days or when there is an evening class activity.

·         Students wondered why some electives were year-long and what makes an elective grade level specific (The Blue/Gold aspect of the schedule can dictate when a class can be offered, which then dictates whether or not it can be a trimester class or year-long class and what grade levels will have access.)

·         Should we put HTV on the offerings when the class if filled by applications?

We ended the meeting with this challenge: share one positive thing witnessed on campus and one thing that made you feel uncomfortable.

Positive observations:

·         The teachers are really nice and really care.

·         Students help other students, especially when new to our school.

Uncomfortable observations:

·         Inappropriate language/talk in the gym locker rooms

·         When someone pulls a person away from a group to have a private conversation.

One of the main suggestions offered to the Advisors – students should speak directly to their teachers when they have questions about curriculum, homework, and/or things that make them feel uncomfortable.  I want to assure all students - your teachers want to hear your concerns directly if it pertains to their class and/or your safety and comfort at school.

The second request: Student should be aware and open to what they appreciate about Crocker as well as what concerns them.  We should celebrate the good and address the concerns so Crocker can continue to meet all our expectations for a safe and happy school environment!

The next Crocker Advisors meeting is March 29th at Lunch.  Please come if you want to join the conversation!

Happy Friday,

Dr. Adams
