Good Morning Crocker.
Below is the recap from the Crocker Advisor Meeting:
Positive things the Advisors have noticed around campus:
· Students seem generally happy
· They love the Physical Education Department offering intramurals
· Students have not seen bullying
· Teachers have been flexible and super understanding
· Overall morale is good
Negative comments:
· TRASH is an issue!
Suggestions for change:
The Advisors were interested in the Wednesday trash pick-up community service plan. They wondered if 5th period would be the better time for the group to be picking up trash. Although they are correct – 5th period would be a good time…the better time is actually during lunch recess. If students are participating in community service they should do so on their own time, not on class time. Students who make a commitment to help keep Crocker clean need to commit personal time to that end. In a perfect world – ALL students would take this on and pick up their own trash! I have never been a proponent of perfection …but in the scenario I quite like the idea of a perfect trash free campus!
Another idea – ‘Free Friday’:
The Advisors came up with the idea of Free Friday – where all grade levels can eat either inside or outside. The Advisors approved this idea starting in May. So, next Friday all grade levels can eat outside and the MPR will also be available and we will also open up the hallways by the Science building only on Friday to accommodate more students eating outside.
Crocker Clubs:
Advisors discussed whether or not we should have more clubs and how that might happen. Below are some thoughts the Team discussed:
· Students might not know how to get a club started.
· Should we put out a survey to students about their interest in clubs
· Would it be helpful if in the beginning of the year students knew the teachers who might be interested in sponsoring a club so they know who to approach with their ideas?
· Maybe clubs should just run during lunch so students can still have lunch recess.
· Maybe students just like to hangout – they value their own time to hang with friends and clubs are not important.
· The school is not that big –attendance in each club would be low if we have too many.
Social Time & Study Time after School:
· Students already have many activities after school
· They would like more retreats during the school day (Next Year’s WEB is addressing this)
· Thursdays 2:15 – 3:30 might be a good time to offer something– parents would have to organize and run because teachers have meetings those afternoons.
· Opening the Library Wednesdays 3:30 – 4:30 as a pilot was agreed upon. Dr. Adams will run this program next year.
CAASPP Testing and Exploration Week, May 21st:
· 7th and 8th grade students have heard there will be a change in how Exploration Week will run this year. They really liked last year and they are worried it will not be as good.
· It was agreed they need to wait and experience this year before making judgements.
· Teachers have been working hard to make sure students will have fun and enriched Exploration Week experiences.
It was a great meeting. I so enjoy meeting with the Advisors and I cannot wait to see the other ideas and changes they will support at out next meeting.
Best,
Dr. Adams
